A public artwork cannot be evaluated as good or bad, but successful or not. A successful public artwork should have three elements: 1. Directly and clearly communicates the information that is widely recognized by the public (universal message). 2. Creates interpretation dimension for the viewers with symbols (coding) and 3. Establishes the interaction and relation between the site and the artwork (site specific). The artwork of Guo-Tsang Liou - ¡§Spring greetings from hundreds of golden rats; Fortune knocking from thousands of silver magpies¡¨ comprises the three elements. From the intersection circle of Ren-Ai Road to the Sun Yet-San Memorial Hall, the artwork integrates the messages through introduction, elucidation, transition, and summing up.

I. ¡§Silver magpies are telling good news¡¨
1. Introduction: ¡§Silver magpies are telling good news¡¨ on Ren-ai intersection circle

The magpies fly from the bushes, spiraling the intersection circle, and then fly toward the Sun Yet-san Memorial Hall along the Ren-ai Road .

2. Elucidation: Lucky magpies on Ren-ai Road
Where the magpies pass by, they light up the trees. The floating lights extend time and space.

3. Transition: The light boxes outside of the Sun Yet-San Memorial Hall are wrapped to present ¡§Great (Red) Fortune is knocking at the door¡¨
The red-based and golden color-outlined light boxes outside of the Sun Yet-San Memorial Hall are like the spring couplet hangings as well as the lanterns. They not only convey the happy atmosphere, but also deliver the main theme of ¡§Golden Rats' Wedding¡¨.

4. Summing up: Main Lantern ¡§Golden rats are getting married¡¨
The lantern design utilizes the Chinese paper-cutting art to tell a well-known folk story of ¡§the rats' wedding¡¨. The ball represents reunion. As it also looks like a lantern or a ribbon ball, the design not only adds more cheerful feelings, but also corresponds to the main theme. The whole work directly and clearly communicates the main theme and it also delivers the messages of ¡§spring and happiness¡¨ as well as the ¡§rat year¡¨. Furthermore, the lantern presentation enhances the festival atmosphere, fitting the first element ¡V directly and clearly communicates the public well-recognized information.

II. The Sun Yet-San Memorial Hall is disapeared
The Sun Yet-San Memorial Hall is wrapped up and the existing object is disappeared. However, the originally non-existing object (main lantern) turns into the focus. The exchange of the fabrication and real object creates a dialog interaction, making the Sun Yet-San Memorial Hall no longer the memorial hall, but rather a symbol, a place where the magpies perch on, or just a background curtain of the main lantern. This symbol should be interpreted by the viewers, and the viewers will get different meanings from the symbol according to their unique cultural background and life experience. They will unconsciously be involved in the artwork and become the second creator. This matches the second element-creates the interpretation dimension for the viewers with symbols.

Main Lantern theme ¡§Spring greetings from hundreds of golden mice; Fortune knocking from thousands of silver magpies¡¨

  Art Inspiration
Artist: Guo-Tsang Liou
The silver magpies are hovering from a ray of light to the red-tiled roof of a mansion. This is the new home of the newly wed golden mice. In the silver magpies congratulations, the golden mouse couples will bring Taiwan a prosperous and peaceful year.

The artwork utilizes red color from the new year's door couplet hangings. Red is applied as the base color and the golden color outlines the lantern. The artwork presents multiple layers of design.

¢¹ . Silver magpies are telling the good news
Silver magpies fly from a ray of light, hovering and fluttering. With the change of lights, it seems that the magpies are flying forward one after another.

¢º . Great (Red) fortune is knocking at the door
Just like the Sun Yet-San Memorial Hall, the surrounding light boxes are colored with red and outlined with golden color. The design expects to make the lantern artworks part of the city, and the city part of the artwork.

III. Golden mice are getting married
The mice are getting married and the good luck will come with the spring. Hundreds of three-dimensional mouse figures are connected to form a ball that is just like a three-dimensional puzzle, a traditional artwork of ribbon ball or paper-cutting art. The golden mouse couple with traditional wedding dress is surrounded by hundreds of mice, and in the center of the revolving lantern, they are hosting a cheerful wedding. As the lantern spins, the treasure will also roll to you from everywhere.

¢¼. Red-tiled roof mansion
The Sun Yet-San Memorial Hall behind the main lantern is wrapped in red. The red three-dimensional object is outlined with golden color and corresponds to the red-golden mice of main lantern. The design is expected to comprise the environment as part of the artwork and make it a super main lantern. The red roof mansion of golden mice is where the silver magpies perch on.
